JACL Pacific Southwest District Project Community Presents: Culmination!
The Japanese American Citizens League, Pacific Southwest District will be celebrating the conclusion of their

youth community and advocacy program with its annual Culmination event on August 24, 2010 in the Garden Room of the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center. Project: Community! invites everyone in the community to come out and celebrate our youth in this free event.
Concluding its third year, Project: Community! was created to develop and empower the youth’s voice in Little Tokyo. Through a series of interactive sessions, high school participants gain an understanding of identity as well as the importance of preservation of the Japanese American community. Each session gathers facilitators and speakers from various parts of the community to conduct interactive workshops focused on specific topics ranging from identity, to the power of place, to grassroots organizing on a youth level.
Project: Community! Culmination is a free event, open to the public. Refreshments will be served. It will be held August 24, 2010 from 8:00-10:00pm in the Garden Room of the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, located at 244 S. San Pedro St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. by Friday May 21, 2010. Participants will be notified of acceptance in early June.
Since its inception in 2008, Project: Community! has strived to create a space for high school youth to learn more about themselves and their roles within the Little Tokyo community. As the torch is passed from the sansei generation to the yonsei and gosei it becomes even more critical for youth to become invested in the community. Changes being made to our community now will effect these generations and their children for years to come. During workshops participants will have a chance to meet and connect with inspirational community leaders on an intimate and personal level.
Additionally, they will have a chance to meet other up-and-coming young community activists. At the midway point of the program participants are taken on a weekend retreat; last summer this retreat was held in conjunction with PC’s sister program based in Northern California. Joint workshops with interns from the Nikkei Community Internship sponsored by the California Japanese American Community Leadership Council were a fun highlight for past generations of Project Community participants as well.
The JACL Pacific Southwest District recognizes the importance of youth as the future of the community. The district carries out a variety of youth initiatives including: leadership development at high school and collegiate levels, and stimulation of youth engagement through public policy and community organizing. In this way the JACL strives to politicize our youth for future civil rights and community advocacy.
